The meta tag icon
toggles with the keyword icon
on the Common section of the Insert Menu Bar.
Only one of them can be seen at a time. Hover over either with the mouse and you will see that they are called
Head:Meta and Head:Keywords.
Titles
Titles (also called title tags) are extremely important to help you achieve high-ranking search engine listing. Write your titles very carefully. Work your major phrases into your title tags and make sure each page has a different title.
Titles are written into the Title box on the menu bar at the top of the screen; a new page will have Untitled Document written in the title box. Titles appear at the top of a page when it is displayed on the Web.
Site title: the title of your index page. Search engines show the title so make sure yours is clear and is likely to invite the searcher in.
Document titles are the most important part of the page in terms of search results so select your Titles with extreme care. Run a site report to check that all your documents have titles. Site > Reports > choose Untitled Documents, results show in Reports Bar at the bottom of the screen.
Search engines also use Headings so have one near the top of your home page to repeat the title of the page to reinforce its importance.
Setting Keywords Properties
Keywords are one kind of meta tag.
Many search engine robots (programs that automatically browse the web gathering information for search engines to index) read the contents of the Keywords meta tag and use the information to index your pages in their databases. Because some search engines limit the number of keywords or characters they index, or ignore all keywords if you go beyond the limit, it is a good idea to use just a few well-chosen keywords, so keep it to about 10 - 15 words; put commas between the words or phrases.
In the Common section of the Insert panel choose the icon. Insert relevant words and short phrases that describe the content of the page.

Insert > HTML > Head Tags > keywords
Setting Description Properties
Description is another kind of Meta Tag.
Many search engine robots read the contents of the Description meta tag. Some use the information to index your pages in their databases and some also display the information on the search results page instead of displaying the first few lines of your document. Some search engines limit the number of characters they index so it is a good idea to limit your description to two or three short, succinct sentences.
Insert > HTML > Head Tags > description
Suggested length of tags:
Title tag: 5 to 10 words, including the company name and relevant keywords, 90 characters ( including spaces between words)
Description tag: Concise summary of the page, an upper limit of perhaps, 170 characters
Keyword tag: An upper limit of 900 characters with spaces - keep it simple and relevant. 10 - 20 Keywords per page
To see if you have already put in some keywords or description:
View > Head Content. Icons will appear at the top left of your file.
These will show if you have put in Keywords and/or Description: Keywords:
Description: ![]()
The Title icon also shows: ![]()
Click on the icons to show the contents in the Properties Inspector Bar. You can edit them here.
Tell Search Engines You Exist
You can do this by going to the main Search Engine sites and adding your site. eg from the Google home page choose About Google > Submit your content to Google. It can take up to three months for your site to appear in a search so be patient. Links to and from other sites generating traffic help and do not forget the alt text for your images.
There are thousands of search engines but you really only need to submit to the top ones.
